The universal symptom of fibromyalgia is a pain. The body pain of fibromyalgia can be aggravated by noise, weather change, and emotional stress and the pain involves both sides of the body. It usually affects the neck, buttocks, shoulders, arms, the upper back, and the chest. Tender points, or pressure points, are generally located around the elbows, shoulders, knees, hips, back of the head, and the surfaces of the breastbone. Since a specific diagnosis of fibromyalgia is hard, and no confirmatory laboratory tests are available, patients with fibromyalgia can be misdiagnosed as having depression as their primary underlying problem.
Fibromyalgia may correlate to “Vata Roga” in Ayurveda. It is caused due to vitiation of vata dosha. Due to any history of the previous injury, over exercises, excessive indulgence in foods, which are dry, cold, salty, keeping awake at nights, fasting, indigestion and other stress-related factors vata gets vitiated and causes all kinds of pains all over the body.
